UNESCO Internship to review evidence on “Sexual Harassment in (Earth) Science”
Job Purpose:
Assess and conduct research on the extent of sexual harassment in (Earth) science, especially considering statistics and facts. Considering the huge amount of media attention, it is necessary to assess how accurate and significant recent attention, including in the scientific press, to this issue is. UNESCO is very concerned about this issue, but would like to create a science/evidence based assessment on this topic.
This project is within the framework of the UNESCO Earth Sciences and Geohazards Risk Reduction Section and the UNESCO STEM and Gender Advancement (SAGA) project.
All this work will happen in very close collaboration between different units within UNESCO.
Expected Outcomes:
• A science/evidence based assessment on the extent of sexual harassment in Earth science.
• A final report/document on the results of this study
• Distribution of the report through the UNESCO website, other UNESCO channels and different UNESCO partners
• Support the development of policy and strategies against sexual harassment which can be used by science associations, science unions, universities with Earth science programmes and employers
• Creation of a portfolio of best practices for the future
Requirements:
• UNESCO internships are unpaid.
• Must be currently enrolled in a postgraduate degree or equivalent in geography, geology, geophysics, glaciology, soil science or other related field.
• Open to either sex.
• Must be able to legally reside in Paris for the duration of the internship.
• Excellent research and drafting skills required, plus an interest in the subject.
Period:
Two to four months, starting date: late spring/early summer 2016
